Several local universities have received national recognition. The University of Southern Indiana has been ranked 14th for Top Public Schools among Regional Universities in the Midwest by the U.S. News and World Report. USI also ranked 21st for Best Value in Regional Universities in the Midwest. U.S. News and World Report is the global authority in education rankings and serves as a guide for prospective students and their families. The rankings evaluate 1,500 colleges and universities on up to seventeen measures of academic quality.

The University of Evansville was named the fifth best Regional University in the Midwest in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges rankings. The report focuses on academic quality and places emphasis on outcome measures, including graduation rates, retention rates and social mobility.

In Gibson County, U.S. News & World Report named Oakland City University as the seventh best university in the nation for Social Mobility. This category measures schools’ graduation rates for students who received Pell Grants, which is typically from households earning less than $50,000 annually.

 

Holiday World and Splashin’ Safari’s Wildebeest once again took top honors. For the 12th year in a row, the water coaster was named the world’s number one water park ride. That was at the 2022 Golden Ticket Awards held over the weekend at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in San Antonio. Splashin’ Safari also claimed the Number two Water Park spot. Holidays in the Sky Drone Show was among the top five new shows. The parks together earned number three in guest experience. The wooden coasters were named among the world’s top 25.

 

The City of Evansville has settled a lawsuit stemming from a crash in 2017 that killed a man and his two children. On Monday night, Evansville City Council approved $1.75 million to settle the suit filed by Janae Carter, the only survivor in her car. Her children, 2-year-old Princess Carter and 7-month-old Prince Carter, as well as their father, 26-year-old Terrance Barker, were all killed. The lawsuit alleged that the city was negligent when EPD officers chased a man who then crashed into the car carrying Janae Carter and her family. The settlement will be paid through the city’s insurance carrier.

 

Another Mt. Vernon Wildcat Football player is up for a Player of the Week Award. Running Back, Kortez Stewart has been nominated for the Week 4 News 25 Home Team Friday MVP thanks to his outstanding game last Friday at Jeffersonville. Stewart rushed for 169 yards and had 3 total touchdowns, in the Wildcats 48-0 rout of Jeffersonville last Friday night. Mt. Vernon fans can vote for Kortez Stewart at tristatehomepage.com.

 

Local Sports From Last Night:

- Mt. Vernon Volleyball lost in straight-sets at Castle (25-17, 25-11, 25-18). The Wildcats are now 7-5 on the season. 

- Mt. Vernon Girls Soccer got beat at home against Gibson Southern, 5-2. The MV goals came from Lera Wilson and Ella Sponn. Wildcats drop to 5-3 on the year.

- Mt. Vernon Boys Soccer squeaked out a 3-2 win at Princeton.

- In Girls Golf at the PAC Meet at Country Oaks Golf Course, Mt. Vernon finished 2nd with a team score of 189. North Posey finished 7th and they shot 208 as a team. Gibson Southern won the meet with a team score of 165. 

- North Posey Volleyball took care of Pike Central at home in 4-set. Vikings improve to an impressive 13-3 on the season. 

- North Posey Girls Soccer got beat at home against Harrison, 2-0. North Posey falls to 1-6 on the year.
